Mathematics Day (DEC22): Maths Day speech tips and ideas for Srinivasa Ramanujan's birth anniversary

  • Maths Day is celebrated on December 22.
  • Mathematics Day marks the birth anniversary of legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
  • Ramanujan was born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu.
  • Though Ramanujan had almost no formal training in pure mathematics, he made substantial contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory and infinite series.
  • He had developed a liking for mathematics at a very young age, mastering trigonometry at 12 and was eligible for a scholarship at the Government Arts College in Kumbakonam.
  • Once GH Hardy told Ramanujan that his cab’s number, 1729, was "rather a dull one." However, Ramanujan said that it's a very interesting number as it is the smallest number which can be expressed as the sum of two different cubes in two different ways (1729 = 1^3 + 12^3 = 9^3 + 10^3). That's how
  • 1729 came to be known as the Hardy-Ramanujan Number.
  • Ramanujan was elected to the prestigious Royal Society for his research on Elliptic Functions and theory of numbers.
  • Ramanujan was the first Indian to be elected a Fellow of Trinity College.
  • In 2012, then-Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh declared December 22 as National Mathematics Day. The 2012 India stamp featured Srinivasa Ramanujan.

About Srinivasa Ramanujan

Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu to an Iyengar Brahmin family. He is considered one of the greatest Indian mathematicians of all time.
He studied at the Government College in Kumbakonam in 1903. He failed his exams there as he didn't like other subject and got enrolled in Madras’ Pachaiyappa College.
When Ramanujan started working in the Madras Port Trust in 1912, his colleagues recognised his genius mind and one of them referred him to Professor GH Hardy of Trinity College, Cambridge University. Ramanujan met Hardy in 1903. He published several papers with Hardy’s help and the duo even collaborated for several projects.
He died on April 26, 1920, at the age of 32.
